Bowhunting for spring BLACK BEAR in British Columbia--n-- SPRING 2018 --nI'm often asked why I hunt bears.

But I'm rarely asked why I hunt deer or elk.

As a conscientious human I often consider this question; "Why do I hunt bears?" I would be remiss to infer that my motives for hunting are purely altruistic.

The truth is, my reasons for hunting are diverse and complex--some reasons being more pure than others and some reasons extending beyond my conscious understanding.

But I can say with confidence that the foundation undergirding my motives for hunting is a belief in conservation--a belief in conserving the wild places and wild animals we have left.

All living things are faced with a single irreducible truth--LIFE CONSUMES LIFE.

In the face of this reality humans have a responsibility to conserve and manage the resources we have left.

The human population isn't getting any smaller.

It's more important than ever to manage the wild places and the wild animals that still exist.

Hunting is a mechanism by which I choose to feed my family and conserve and manage the wild places and animals I cherish.

I hunt predators as I hunt any animal--to feed my family and to ensure a balanced and healthy animal population in areas where human development and shrinking animal habitat continue to challenge the continued existence of all species.

nIn this short film I share some of my thoughts on bears as a species; what I know about black bear conservation status and some basic reasons for why I hunt bears.

As previously stated, my reasons for hunting are diverse and complex.

And this film is by no means a full exposition of my motives for hunting; but rather it's an attempt to explain the basic conservation ethic that forms the cornerstone of my overarching beliefs about hunting.

    Stay GRITTY my friends.
